Choosing an All-Inclusive Resort: Our Top Tips

If you’re looking for a stress-free getaway that your whole group will enjoy, an all-inclusive resort may be a perfect fit. With beautifully manicured properties and a set rate for meals, drinks, and activities, you can relinquish the worry of planning to truly relax and reconnect with yourself and loved ones. Going all-inclusive is a unique experience and each property features different amenities, so some preparation helps ensure you soak up every moment of your precious vacation time. If an all-inclusive getaway is on your bucket list, here are some tips to keep in mind!

Know what “all inclusive” means. At all-inclusive resorts you don’t have to shell out your credit card for each meal or activity, allowing you to plan your day exactly how you wish without worry. This is great for families and groups, because all ages can find activities they enjoy best. However, keep in mind that some services are outside the base rate, such as spa treatments, off-resort excursions, golf, or premium dining/beverages. Understanding the costs beforehand will avoid unhappy surprises and let you prioritize your splurge purchases.

Gratuity. Some resorts have a “no tipping policy” where the gratuity is included in your base rate. Typically, however, tips are much appreciated by the staff working hard to make your stay enjoyable. Plus, tipping your bartender or server might give you some VIP status that others don’t have. If you choose to tip, know that U.S. currency is widely accepted throughout Mexico and the Caribbean, though local currency is also accepted and appreciated.

Deciding when to go. Many properties offer discounts in the off-peak season, which in Mexico and the Caribbean runs from September to December except for the holidays. Keep in mind that this is hurricane season, so travel insurance is always a must, but particularly so during this time of year to cover you financially if your dates need to change. Peak season will have higher rates, but you’ll have more assurance that all activities, restaurants, and facilities will be fully open and available.

What matters most to you? All-inclusive resorts cater to a range of groups, from family-friendly to adults-only. Think about what activities are most important; for example, are you primarily interested in relaxing by the pool or beach, or do you want to fill your days with excursions and activities? Are you wanting active nightlife or a laid-back vibe? Resorts also vary significantly in size; large properties offer more activities but may be spread out and more challenging to navigate. Think of the vacation type that you’re truly seeking before choosing a property.

Know your room type. Do you want to enjoy the scenery from the privacy and comfort of your room? It’s important to understand that “ocean view” does not necessarily mean you’ll have a direct view of the water, but instead it might be visible from far away or at an angle. Also know that “five-star” has a different meaning outside the U.S. and may be like a two or three-star room, especially in places where ratings aren’t well-regulated. Viewing photos online only goes so far, because resorts work hard to portray the best image possible. Also note that many all-inclusives have double beds rather than queen or king-sized. We’ve vetted many properties and can advise you on what to realistically expect.

Reservations and dress code. Some resorts require dinner and activity reservations, while at others it’s first come, first served. If the resort allows reservations, make them as soon as you arrive so you don’t miss out on your priorities. Also remember to check the dress code prior to departure so you can pack the appropriate attire; resorts are usually causal during the day, but some events and dining options might be more formal in the evening.

Air and ground transportation. Make sure to arrange your airport-to-resort transportation ahead of time. Because it’s pre-paid and guaranteed, you’ll avoid the hassle and risks of navigating ride-shares or taxis where costs and local practices can vary significantly from the U.S. As for air travel, sometimes valuable discounts are offered on flights as part of a package. As long as it’s not on an ultra-low-cost carrier such as Spirit or Frontier, we say go for it. If there aren’t significant savings, you might consider your own flight arrangements, as it gives you more control over the booking and ensures you receive any eligible status benefits with your airline.

Visiting an all-inclusive resort is a great way to relax and unwind where all the details are planned for you. We love this type of vacation, and when you book with us, you’ll have confidence knowing the property is vetted and matched to you and your group!
